When I was on Facebook one day (yes, Facebook… uncool as it is, it’s how I stay in touch with people from my hometown, from school, from family…), a guy tossed out this statement: “First person to respond gets their rent paid for the month!” I was intrigued, so I decided to reply. I have seen something similar, by someone on Twitter who was well-known for paying people’s bills. He never chose me, so when I saw this person doing something almost identical, I had to know what was going on with it.
This was before I knew much of anything about scams, so there wasn’t an instant “aha!” when they set out to deliberately confuse me, then offered to help me by screen-sharing. I went along with it up to a point. When we reached that point, where it was obvious that they were scamming me, I bitched them out and then hung up on them. I went on the offensive and made sure to change passwords (and block their number!) before I did anything else. When I returned to where I’d been on Facebook, that person had removed EVERYTHING. Is this a common ploy — this offer to pay people’s bills? Besides that one guy on Twitter, I’d never heard of it before. And I haven’t heard of it since.
Thanks for any info! Appreciate you guys! ❤️
